THIS MAP PRESENTS THE CIRCUMSTANCES AT THE OUTSET OF THE BATTLE OF CHANCELLORSVILLE.  THE 1st USS ARE WITH THE III CORPS, SICKLES' CORPS, ADVANCING ON CATHERINE'S FURNACE TO SEE THE LAST OF JACKSON'S WAGONS MOVE PAST.  SICKLES IMMEDIATELY TOLD HOOKER THAT THE CONFEDERATES WERE RETREATING TO RICHMOND.  JACKSON THEN COMPLETED HIS FLANKING MOVEMENT, ATTACKED, AND THE SHARPSHOOTERS WITHDREW TO TRY TO STOP THE COLLAPSE OF THE UNION LINES.


THIS MAP DEPICTS HOOKER'S RETREAT ACROSS THE U.S. FORD AFTER LEE'S ATTACKS.  THE 1st USS REMAINED WITH THE III CORPS AND FOUGHT OFF A VARIETY OF ATTACKS PRIOR TO THEIR OWN RETREAT ACROSS THE RAPPAHANNOCK RIVER.
